Lately, crocheting has been very popular in our handmade craft group. That’s why we have chosen crocheted houseleek in upcycled glass jar to be our product for the next County fair. In that way we have connected our product with our school garden, tradition and cultural heritage. We want to point out the importance of taking care of our environment. By using upcycled materials we want to show that even small steps can make a big difference for our planet.
What makes this product special is its connection to a skill that was used to be a part of our grandmas’ everyday life. By crocheting and knitting they made clothes and decorations for their families. At the same time they spent quality time together, talked and passed their knowledge on young generations.
Here are some fun facts about the houseleek. It was almost inevitable in gardens and roofs of our grandparents’ houses. It was believed that houseleek guards the house and protects health of family members. That’s why it was often planted on roofs.Houseleek symbolizes strength and endurance. It is also known as a plant with medicinal properties which is widespread in Dalmatia. It was also often used in folk medicine. This plant teaches us that we should be patient and persistent even in hard times.
To make this product we use crochet hooks, upcycled glass jars, pea gravel and labels. We upcycled glass jars by removing labels and then washing them properly. In that way we have reduced waste. When the houseleek is finished, we put some pea gravel in the jar and add the houseleek. Finally we put a label on the jar and our product is done.
Through this work we want to encourage our members to enjoy creative work more and spend less time using gadgets and modern technology.
In conclusion, our product isn’t only a decoration but a message about the importance of taking care of tradition and nature.
